IHSAHN: New Album Arktis Set For March 4 Release!

Candlelight Records proudly announces March 4 as the global release date for the sixth solo album from Ihsahn titled Arktis. The album will be available in standard CD, deluxe CD (featuring additional exclusive content), and vinyl formats. The album’s first single, “Mass Darkness,” is released today via iTunes and Amazon. It is available for streaming now via Spotify. Decibel Magazine exclusively presents the Michael Dickinson (Orange Goblin, Gallows) created lyric video for the song available for viewing HERE.

Arktis was recorded at Ihsahn’s studio in Notodden, Norway and was mixed in Sweden by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia). The album features ten songs and is the longest and most spirited of Ihsahn’s solo recordings. It features guest appearances from Einar Solberg (Leprous), Matt Heafy (Trivium), Jorgen Munkeby (Shining), Tobias Ornes Andersen (Shining, ex-Leprous), and renowned Norwegian author Hans Herbjornsrud. Graphic elements for Arktis once again have been provided by award-winning Spanish designer Ritxi Ostariz.

Few artists in modern heavy music have created such an extraordinary and unique body of work as Ihsahn. Having refined and redefined black metal with the now legendary Emperor, Ihsahn is Norway’s foremost musical extremist. He has spent the last decade establishing himself as a fearless and wildly idiosyncratic solo artist and even by his own remarkable standards, Arktis is a bold and mind-blowing step into the unknown. Ihsahn comments, “my focus for this album was to write within more traditional song structures and still give each song a strong individual identity, be that through a re-occurring melody, a chorus, sound design or the good, old guitar riff. I also wanted to explore this on the production side, blending organic rock sounds with more modern expressions.”

The stark visuals utilized in the video for “Mass Darkness” are inspired by late 1800’s Norwegian explorer and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Fridtjof Nansen. It depicts his famed three-year expedition to the North Pole first by ship and then by foot over land. Ihsahn notes, “the whole atmosphere of facing the cold, immense unknown fits rather good with the general lyrical concept of the entire album. It paints a sense of doubt, hopelessness and frustration yet celebrates curiosity, free will and the choice to avoid conformity. It is, at best, an observance of one’s insignificance in relation to time, nature and space yet each individual’s ability to make things matter even if only to themselves.”

Guitar World Executive Editor Brad Angle calls Ihsahn, one of the most influential, progressive and enduring musicians to emerge out of the classic Norwegian black metal scene.” Loudwire says he is “an elite musician.” Blabbermouth declares him, “an evolutionary wunderkind.” For the 40-year old musician, the global accolades have yet to impact his creativity with each and every album pushing boundaries and preconceived sounds typically assigned to heavy music. With Arktis, he continues his blending of extreme metal and progressive rock that will easily sustain his already massive fanbase while opening even more doors for the humble multi-instrumentalist. Ihsahn says,” with the contributions from several of my talented friends and the incredible mixing skills of Jens Bogren, I feel the end result is just as varied yet cohesive as I hoped for. Actually, I can’t recall having had such a great time making an album before and hopefully that comes across too.”

IHSAHN: New Track Now Playing At Loudwire; Release Of Das Seelenbrechen Draws Near

With the North American release of Ihsahn’s fifth solo offering, Das Seelenbrechen, now less than two weeks away, today mammoth metal gateway, Loudwire, offers up an exclusive premiere of sixth track, “Tacit.”

Recorded at his own studio in Norway in collaboration with drummer Tobias Ornes Anderson (Leprous), Ihsahn’s Das Seelenbrechen takes its name from Nietzche’s famed Human, All Too Human: A Book of Free Spirits and courageously eschews traditional metal instrumentation in favor of a limitless textural landscape that evokes the freewheeling spirit of artists like Diamanda Galas, Scott Walker, and John Zorn. A daring and exploratory recording that is a musical contrast to the progressive shades and saxophone augmentations of the former Emperor vocalist/guitarist’s previous two albums (2009′s After and 2011′s Eremita), Das Seelenbrechen exists in an entirely unfamiliar sonic world as Ihsahn draws upon his most esoteric influences, fully embracing the spirit of the avant-garde.

Elaborates Loudwire of the track, “the musician brings an atmospheric and dissonant feel to the song, rich with drumming that adds a great sense of solidarity to the song’s controlled chaos. The dynamic piece is highly experimental as well, mixing mellow, yet grand themes with surprising leads carried by saxophone.”

Peel back your ears and face the sounds of “Tacit” at THIS LOCATION.

Few artists in modern heavy music have created such an extraordinary and distinctive body of work as Ihsahn. Having refined and redefined black metal with the now legendary Emperor, Norway’s foremost musical extremist has spent the last decade establishing himself as a fearless and wildly idiosyncratic solo artist.

Das Seelenbrechen will be released in North America on October 22 via Candlelight Records and will come available on CD, limited edition digibook (with expanded graphics and liner notes), and double 180-gram clear vinyl. Preorders are available HERE.

“A resolute and forward thinking release which boldly presses the agenda of its author. Das Seelenbrechen is a grotesquely wonderful creation. 9/10″ – Ghost Cult

“Ihsahn’s most daring and difficult solo release… if you liked the more unconventional side of his earlier work, then this will be right up your alley.” – Metal-Rules

IHSAHN: Das Seelenbrechen Set For October Release

Candlelight Records today confirms October 22 as the North American release date for Das Seelenbrechen, the fifth solo album from Ihsahn. Das Seelenbrechen will be available on compact disc, a limited edition digibook (with expanded graphics and liner notes), and double 180-gram clear vinyl. Pre-orders are set to launch via online and physical retail outlets beginning September 10.

Das Seelenbrechen is a bold and adventurous recording that is a musical contrast to the progressive shades and saxophone augmentations of the former Emperor vocalist/guitarist’s previous two albums (2009′s After and 2011′s Eremita). The recording exists in an entirely unfamiliar sonic world as Ihsahn draws upon his most esoteric influences, fully embracing the spirit of the avant-garde. Comprising ten vivid but disparate explorations in sound that range from bittersweet electronica to deranged and feral improvisation, Das Seelenbrechen is every bit as dark and destructive as the artist’s previous work but is far more disorientating and disturbing than anything he has attempted in his past.

“Musically, this album is a very deliberate sidestep to what I have been doing; a necessity to reset the creative parameters so not to fall into formula,” shares Ihsahn. “I think I do my best work slightly outside of my comfort zone and I’ve wanted to do something like this for a long time. Free form and improvisational can be scary for a musician but it is very liberating at the same time.”

Recorded at his own studio in Norway in collaboration with drummer Tobias Ornes Anderson (Leprous), Das Seelenbrechen courageously eschews traditional metal instrumentation in favor of a limitless textural landscape that evokes the freewheeling spirit of artists like Diamanda Galas, Scott Walker, and John Zorn. In discussing the album Ihsahn notes, “even though my music has changed over the years, I feel there is a source of inspiration at the bottom of it all that is constant. The general idea for this album was to try and dig deep into this raw source and express it without too much refinery and do so within a less familiar musical landscape. It is the reason for several purely improvised songs and parts on this album. I spontaneously performed with just lyrics and the idea of the atmosphere I was wishing to create. While many will feel it sounds different, I don’t think it is necessarily different from my previous album. And in my head, it will fit in perfectly with my plans for the sixth album.”

Das Seelenbrechen takes its name from Nietzche’s famed Human, All Too Human: A Book of Free Spirits. Writings by the 19th century philosopher and other historical figures have often found their way into Ihsahn’s songwriting. “The title is taken from one of his aphorisms on art and how, in its purest form, is neither good nor bad,” says Ihsahn. The album’s abstract packaging, again conceived by Spanish graphic artist Ritxi Ostariz, embraces the aphorisms essence.

Few artists in modern heavy music have created such an extraordinary and unique body of work as Ihsahn. Having refined and redefined black metal with the now legendary Emperor, Norway’s foremost musical extremist has spent the last decade establishing himself as a fearless and wildly idiosyncratic solo artist. “Of all my albums, my goals for this one have been the most abstract. I’ve had quite a rollercoaster ride putting it together but now that it is done I must say I am very pleased.”
