HAVOK: Kick Off North American Tour With Soulfly

Following their massive headlining tour this past Summer, Denver thrash battalion, Havok, will kick off another stretch of live assaults supporting Soulfly! Set to commence today in Dallas, the journey will level more than two dozen cities throughout the U.S. and Canada and includes two one-off dates supporting The Casualties.

Havok will be touring in support of their Unnatural Selection full-length, released earlier this year via Candlelight Records. Produced by Terry Date (Pantera, Overkill, Deftones) and mastered by James Murphy (Testament, Death), Unnatural Selection has raised the eyebrows of fans and critics nationwide for its punishing thrash attack. Both instrumentally and conceptually sophisticated, Havok have truly hit their mark with a sound that will please fans new and old.

The album features ten new tunes, including the band’s rendition of Black Sabbath classic “Children of the Grave.” Gushes Fearnet.com “From the simple but effective songwriting and tight technical skills to rock-solid production and vintage-style album art, this record comes off like a newly-unearthed time capsule from the Big Four’s golden era.” Adds Thrash Hits, “Thrash is still very much alive, and the fact of the matter is that Unnatural Selection perfectly captures the essence of the legendary old-school thrash train of thought whilst maintaining the modern-day elements that are prevalent in metal today. With Unnatural Selection, it’s clearer than ever before that Havok live, breathe, and bleed thrash metal, and their passion for it oozes from every part of this album. The future’s in good hands.”

ABSU: Announces Continuation Of North American Tour

Absu today announce details on their upcoming tour, titled North American Connexus Continuation. The ten-city tour will see the band perform a complete set with music spanning throughout their twenty-two year recording career. This excursion is a follow-up mini-tour by the Texas-based mythological occult metal trio since the release of Abzu—the second of a planned trilogy of recordings.

Vocalist/drummer Proscriptor shares, “Since the release of our latest recording, Abzu, the response has been extremely vehement and now is the perfect moment to continue spreading the album’s essence throughout uncharted regions the band did not perform in earlier this year. We purposely waited until the timing was ideal to embark on this additional journey, as we shall continue contaminating the communities with our craft of Mythological Occult Metal.”

Proscriptor also adds, “We have begun the composition/arrangement process for the next album, suitably titled Apsu, which is the Sumerian-Akkadian spelling of the band moniker. We shall wait until the new album is released before we present any of the new material in a live atmosphere.”

Abzu, the band’s seventh studio album, was released October 2011. The album was recorded/mixed by J.T. Longoria (King Diamond/Solitude Aeternus) and features original works by Polish artist Zbigniew Bielak (Ghost, Watain, Entombed, Behemoth, Destroyer 666, Vader, Etc.) Proscriptor commented, “With this record, we appended dirtier elements of psychedelia and fusion. Lyrically, it descends deeper into Enki’s lower world as well the Thelemic Magic(k) System.” He added, “This album is not a ‘natural progression’ from previous releases, but a feat of metaphysical conquest and murkiness.”

Absu came to prominence with the release of their 1993 debut, Barathrum: V.I.T.R.I.O.L. Each album saw continual expansion of the band’s now highly regarded artistic vision and international fanbase. It was with 2001′s Tara that the band truly arrived. The album reached top lists of countless magazines worldwide. Years, however, would pass before any new material would be recorded. In late 2007, the band finally announced their re-awakening. Now teamed with London-based Candlelight Records, the band would take nearly sixteen months writing/recording their sixth album. Absu, featuring contributions from members of King Diamond, Mayhem, Melechesh, Firstborn and Enthroned, was released early 2009.

PESTILENCE: Album Confirmed For November Release

Candlelight Records today confirms November 11th as the North American release date for Obsideo, the new album from Dutch metal extremists Pestilence. Produced by vocalist/guitarist Patrick Mameli, the album is the band’s inaugural recording for the label and first new material from the four-piece since 2011.

“We have gone beyond our human limits to achieve the highest form of brutal music,” reveals Mameli when discussing the album’s creation. “The musicianship is such high quality; it is really ten of the most demanding songs written in death metal.”

Together with long-time guitarist Patrick Uterwijk, Mameli, bassist George Maier and drummer Dave Haley deliver a blistering and genre-lifting effort. “I am chuffed to have Dave in the lineup,” confirmed Mameli earlier this year while discussing the band’s updated cast. “He is one of the best extreme drummers in the world and his talent bring Pestilence to new levels. George is a young and talented bass player that will turn some heads. Both are really down to earth and real easy going guys. Patrick, of course, is my most respected and long-going friend and musician.”

Obsideo boasts Mameli and his innovative guitar work. Utilizing eight-string guitars for the album’s recording, the celebrated musician expands his already massive arsenal of riffs. “The eight string guitar opens a lot of doors,” notes Mameli. “It gives lots of new musical options and allows us to make the music sound more brutal than before. It also forces me to sing in a higher pitch because I don’t want my vocals in the way of the low-tuned guitar parts. My vocals sound more intense and manic than before.”

Formed in 1986, Pestilence took influence from early American and German thrash metal to cultivate its now signature death metal sound. Recording four albums before disbanding in 1994, the band helped to usher the rise in popularity for the genre. Fourteen years later the band reformed; releasing two albums and exciting fans with live performances around the globe. “Mameli and company chose to steer efforts down paths previously unexplored whilst maintaining their vintage essence,” noted Chronicles of Chaos on the band’s 2009 album, Resurrection Macabre (Mascot). Pestilence plans to begin touring in support of Obsideo in the early months of 2014; North America to be included in their worldwide takeover. The band’s last stateside performance was as a featured artist on the second annual 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise that left Miami shores on January 23, 2012.

“Pestilence proved that four kids from a small industrially defunct town were ready to overthrow Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and the rest of the world if need be.” — Decibel

HAVOK: New Video Now Playing At Loudwire

Today the metal technicians at Loudwire hurl forth an exclusive premiere of “Worse Than War,” the latest video from Denver thrash assassins Havok. Directed by Roy Warner who worked on both “From the Cradle to the Grave” and “Point of No Return” clips, the tune comes by way of the recently unleashed Unnatural Selection full-length and addresses the eight stages of genocide: classification, symbolization, dehumanization, organization, polarization, preparation, extermination and denial.

Check out “Worse Than War,” THIS LOCATION.

Released earlier this year via Candlelight Records, Unnatural Selection was produced by Terry Date (Pantera, Overkill, Deftones), mastered by James Murphy (Testament, Death) and continues to reap critical hails from fans and critics domestically and abroad. Metal Injection crowns Unnatural Selection “a contender for one of the best albums of this year because there are simply no flaws in the design,” while MetalSucks notes, “Havok proudly carry the torch of everything awesome about the genre: irrepressible energy, flesh-singeing velocity, and razor-sharp anthems custom made for the purpose of shotgunning beers.” In an impressive 4/5 rating, About.com gushes, “Filled to the brim with headbang-inducing riffs, politically-charged lyrics and guitarist/vocalist David Sanchez’s snarl leading the way, Unnatural Selection would fit right in with Megadeth’s back catalog…. Wrap it all up with Terry Date behind the controls, and Havok just might be in contention for thrash album of the year.” Sputnik Musica agrees, “With Unnatural Selection, Havok has distinguished themselves as the frontrunners of the New Wave of Thrash Metal movement.”

Havok is currently wrapping up a massive North American live takeover that kicked off on July 20th in Juarez, Mexico and included a stop at this year’s Heavy Mtl Festival in Montreal. Additional Fall dates will be announced in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for details.

Havok is guitarist/vocalist David Sanchez, bassist Mike Leon, guitarist Reece Scruggs, and drummer Pete Webber. The band uses/endorses ESP Guitars, Charvel Guitars, EMG Pickups, Ernie Ball, Peavy Amplification, EVH, Pearl Drums, Trick Drums, and Sabian Cymbals.

SADGIQACEA: September Eastern US Tour Dates Confirmed

Sadgiqacea will be performing alongside their comrades Haethen for all shows except the Indianapolis Metalfest III where they’ll play alongside the likes of Incantation, Decrepit Birth, Byzantine and more, but following their early set at the fest the duo will trek over to Dayton, Ohio to meet back up with Haethen for a second show that day.

Sadgiqacea draws from a melting pot of influences that together presents a lush yet tension-filled sound. Their debut full-length, False Prism, is a forty-minute journey bearing four mammoth tracks, captured without the use of overdubs to preserve the authentic recording quality of their live performances, recorded and produced by Chris Grigg of Woe. False Prism was released via Candlelight on CD and limited edition vinyl via Anthropic Records in May.

“The further one delves into the beguiling heterodoxy, rich atmospheres and intricate aural palette presented on False Prism, the more fittingly the otherworldly moniker of Philadelphia über-power-duo Sadgiqacea becomes.” – Decibel

“Sadgiqacea make no bones about their love for all things trippy and psychedelic, and those leanings color many of the spacey, serpentine riffs that make up the bulk of False Prism…” – Pitchfork

“…contrasts a fat, wet guitar tone with crisp doom drumming and abrasive, blackened vocals… False Prism is a seething, captivating album that is out to draw blood.” – Exclaim!

“The Philadelphia two-piece’s epic sludge-doom sprinkles in moments of post-rock, Neurosis-y riffage and black metal…” – Invisible Oranges

“With False Prism, Sadgiqacea show their full potential and their debut album is only the very start of what this band can achieve.” – Scene Point Blank

Pitchfork crowned the record one of this year’s “most irrepressible and energized metal records,” adding that “Woe plays with an urgency that suggests they have a chip on their collective shoulder and a point to prove,” while Cvlt Nation calls it, “exceptional, exciting and a definite landmark in the band’s career and the discography of USBM.” Adds Stereogum, “Withdrawal ups the power quotient by a mile.”

IHSAHN: Das Seelenbrechen Set For October Release

Candlelight Records today confirms October 22 as the North American release date for Das Seelenbrechen, the fifth solo album from Ihsahn. Das Seelenbrechen will be available on compact disc, a limited edition digibook (with expanded graphics and liner notes), and double 180-gram clear vinyl. Pre-orders are set to launch via online and physical retail outlets beginning September 10.

Das Seelenbrechen is a bold and adventurous recording that is a musical contrast to the progressive shades and saxophone augmentations of the former Emperor vocalist/guitarist’s previous two albums (2009′s After and 2011′s Eremita). The recording exists in an entirely unfamiliar sonic world as Ihsahn draws upon his most esoteric influences, fully embracing the spirit of the avant-garde. Comprising ten vivid but disparate explorations in sound that range from bittersweet electronica to deranged and feral improvisation, Das Seelenbrechen is every bit as dark and destructive as the artist’s previous work but is far more disorientating and disturbing than anything he has attempted in his past.

“Musically, this album is a very deliberate sidestep to what I have been doing; a necessity to reset the creative parameters so not to fall into formula,” shares Ihsahn. “I think I do my best work slightly outside of my comfort zone and I’ve wanted to do something like this for a long time. Free form and improvisational can be scary for a musician but it is very liberating at the same time.”

Recorded at his own studio in Norway in collaboration with drummer Tobias Ornes Anderson (Leprous), Das Seelenbrechen courageously eschews traditional metal instrumentation in favor of a limitless textural landscape that evokes the freewheeling spirit of artists like Diamanda Galas, Scott Walker, and John Zorn. In discussing the album Ihsahn notes, “even though my music has changed over the years, I feel there is a source of inspiration at the bottom of it all that is constant. The general idea for this album was to try and dig deep into this raw source and express it without too much refinery and do so within a less familiar musical landscape. It is the reason for several purely improvised songs and parts on this album. I spontaneously performed with just lyrics and the idea of the atmosphere I was wishing to create. While many will feel it sounds different, I don’t think it is necessarily different from my previous album. And in my head, it will fit in perfectly with my plans for the sixth album.”

Das Seelenbrechen takes its name from Nietzche’s famed Human, All Too Human: A Book of Free Spirits. Writings by the 19th century philosopher and other historical figures have often found their way into Ihsahn’s songwriting. “The title is taken from one of his aphorisms on art and how, in its purest form, is neither good nor bad,” says Ihsahn. The album’s abstract packaging, again conceived by Spanish graphic artist Ritxi Ostariz, embraces the aphorisms essence.

Few artists in modern heavy music have created such an extraordinary and unique body of work as Ihsahn. Having refined and redefined black metal with the now legendary Emperor, Norway’s foremost musical extremist has spent the last decade establishing himself as a fearless and wildly idiosyncratic solo artist. “Of all my albums, my goals for this one have been the most abstract. I’ve had quite a rollercoaster ride putting it together but now that it is done I must say I am very pleased.”

EARTH CRISIS: Celebrate 20th Anniversary Of Firestorm, Take Break From Recording New Album

The members of Earth Crisis are readying for their first live dates since early February. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the release of their landmark Firestorm EP, the band will mark the milestone with performances on both coasts and a quick trip south of the border before resuming work on their anticipated new album. Joining the band will be Shai Hulud, Thy Will Be Done, and White Widows Pact for the east coast dates with Lionheart and Harness completing the billing for the west. Tickets are still available via notable agencies and all venue box offices.

Earth Crisis guitarist Scott Crouse recently said, “We can’t believe we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of Firestorm. None of us were even 20-years old when we recorded it. Its release forever changed our lives and, we are told, many other people’s. Come out and help us do this right.” When the dates were initially announced mid-May, the band noted to Alternative Press Magazine, “Come celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Firestorm EP with us! We’ll be playing the EP in its entirety, plus some rarely played other songs.”

LiveHighFive.com calls Firestorm, “one of the heaviest and most influential recordings in hardcore history.” Released via Victory Records in 1993, Wikipedia calls it “one of the more controversial releases in US hardcore history.” The EP would be followed by the release of the Earth Crisis’ full-length debut, Destroy the Machines, in 1995.

Syracuse, New York’s Earth Crisis was founded in 1989. The band has over 200,000 catalog sales to date, according to Nielsen Soundscan. Regardless of passing trends, the five-piece has maintained their vision, dedication to their craft (and causes), and most importantly, respected their fans in the 20-plus years of their performing career. Signing with Candlelight Records late 2012, the band enters a brand new chapter in their career. Vocalist Karl Buechner said, “I’m really looking forward to sharing this next chapter of EXC with Candlelight Records. I think they’ve proven to know the genre well, and will help push us in the right direction.” Reacting to the signing, Lambgoat.com editor Alex Arnold noted, “Earth Crisis has made a name for itself not only through punishing metal and hardcore, but via staunch support of straight edge, animal rights, and veganism. Few bands command the respect that Earth Crisis does, and they’ve earned it through 20 years of hard work and consistency.”

Earth Crisis Firestorm 20th Anniversary Tour:

  • 7/12/2013 Underground Arts – Philadelphia, PA w/ Shai Hulud, Thy Will Be Done, White Widows Pact
  • 7/13/2013 Lost Horizon – Syracuse, NY w/ Shai Hulud, Thy Will Be Done, White Widows Pact
  • 7/14/2013 Santos Party House – New York, NY w/ Shai Hulud, Thy Will Be Done, White Widows Pact
  • 8/15/2013 Pubrock/Chaser – Tempe, AZ w/ Lionheart, Harness
  • 8/16/2013 You Revoucion – Tijuana, Mexico w/ Lionheart, Harness
  • 8/17/2013 Chain Reaction – Anaheim, CA w/ Lionheart, Harness
  • 8/18/2013 924 Gilman Street – Berkeley, CA w/ Lionheart, Harness

Upon completion of the dates, Earth Crisis will resume work on their currently untitled ninth studio album. The album will see the band re-team with noted producer/mixer Zeus (Hatebreed, Throwdown, Municipal Waste).

Earth Crisis is vocalist Karl Buechner, guitarists Scott Crouse and Erick Edwards, bassist Ian Edwards, and drummer Dennis Merrick.
