HAVOK: New Video Now Playing At Loudwire

Today the metal technicians at Loudwire hurl forth an exclusive premiere of “Worse Than War,” the latest video from Denver thrash assassins Havok. Directed by Roy Warner who worked on both “From the Cradle to the Grave” and “Point of No Return” clips, the tune comes by way of the recently unleashed Unnatural Selection full-length and addresses the eight stages of genocide: classification, symbolization, dehumanization, organization, polarization, preparation, extermination and denial.

Check out “Worse Than War,” THIS LOCATION.

Released earlier this year via Candlelight Records, Unnatural Selection was produced by Terry Date (Pantera, Overkill, Deftones), mastered by James Murphy (Testament, Death) and continues to reap critical hails from fans and critics domestically and abroad. Metal Injection crowns Unnatural Selection “a contender for one of the best albums of this year because there are simply no flaws in the design,” while MetalSucks notes, “Havok proudly carry the torch of everything awesome about the genre: irrepressible energy, flesh-singeing velocity, and razor-sharp anthems custom made for the purpose of shotgunning beers.” In an impressive 4/5 rating, About.com gushes, “Filled to the brim with headbang-inducing riffs, politically-charged lyrics and guitarist/vocalist David Sanchez’s snarl leading the way, Unnatural Selection would fit right in with Megadeth’s back catalog…. Wrap it all up with Terry Date behind the controls, and Havok just might be in contention for thrash album of the year.” Sputnik Musica agrees, “With Unnatural Selection, Havok has distinguished themselves as the frontrunners of the New Wave of Thrash Metal movement.”

Havok is currently wrapping up a massive North American live takeover that kicked off on July 20th in Juarez, Mexico and included a stop at this year’s Heavy Mtl Festival in Montreal. Additional Fall dates will be announced in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for details.

IHSAHN: Das Seelenbrechen Set For October Release

Candlelight Records today confirms October 22 as the North American release date for Das Seelenbrechen, the fifth solo album from Ihsahn. Das Seelenbrechen will be available on compact disc, a limited edition digibook (with expanded graphics and liner notes), and double 180-gram clear vinyl. Pre-orders are set to launch via online and physical retail outlets beginning September 10.

Das Seelenbrechen is a bold and adventurous recording that is a musical contrast to the progressive shades and saxophone augmentations of the former Emperor vocalist/guitarist’s previous two albums (2009′s After and 2011′s Eremita). The recording exists in an entirely unfamiliar sonic world as Ihsahn draws upon his most esoteric influences, fully embracing the spirit of the avant-garde. Comprising ten vivid but disparate explorations in sound that range from bittersweet electronica to deranged and feral improvisation, Das Seelenbrechen is every bit as dark and destructive as the artist’s previous work but is far more disorientating and disturbing than anything he has attempted in his past.

“Musically, this album is a very deliberate sidestep to what I have been doing; a necessity to reset the creative parameters so not to fall into formula,” shares Ihsahn. “I think I do my best work slightly outside of my comfort zone and I’ve wanted to do something like this for a long time. Free form and improvisational can be scary for a musician but it is very liberating at the same time.”

Recorded at his own studio in Norway in collaboration with drummer Tobias Ornes Anderson (Leprous), Das Seelenbrechen courageously eschews traditional metal instrumentation in favor of a limitless textural landscape that evokes the freewheeling spirit of artists like Diamanda Galas, Scott Walker, and John Zorn. In discussing the album Ihsahn notes, “even though my music has changed over the years, I feel there is a source of inspiration at the bottom of it all that is constant. The general idea for this album was to try and dig deep into this raw source and express it without too much refinery and do so within a less familiar musical landscape. It is the reason for several purely improvised songs and parts on this album. I spontaneously performed with just lyrics and the idea of the atmosphere I was wishing to create. While many will feel it sounds different, I don’t think it is necessarily different from my previous album. And in my head, it will fit in perfectly with my plans for the sixth album.”

Das Seelenbrechen takes its name from Nietzche’s famed Human, All Too Human: A Book of Free Spirits. Writings by the 19th century philosopher and other historical figures have often found their way into Ihsahn’s songwriting. “The title is taken from one of his aphorisms on art and how, in its purest form, is neither good nor bad,” says Ihsahn. The album’s abstract packaging, again conceived by Spanish graphic artist Ritxi Ostariz, embraces the aphorisms essence.

Few artists in modern heavy music have created such an extraordinary and unique body of work as Ihsahn. Having refined and redefined black metal with the now legendary Emperor, Norway’s foremost musical extremist has spent the last decade establishing himself as a fearless and wildly idiosyncratic solo artist. “Of all my albums, my goals for this one have been the most abstract. I’ve had quite a rollercoaster ride putting it together but now that it is done I must say I am very pleased.”

Das Seelenbrechen Track Listing:

  • 1. Hilber

EARTH CRISIS: Celebrate 20th Anniversary Of Firestorm, Take Break From Recording New Album

The members of Earth Crisis are readying for their first live dates since early February. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the release of their landmark Firestorm EP, the band will mark the milestone with performances on both coasts and a quick trip south of the border before resuming work on their anticipated new album. Joining the band will be Shai Hulud, Thy Will Be Done, and White Widows Pact for the east coast dates with Lionheart and Harness completing the billing for the west. Tickets are still available via notable agencies and all venue box offices.

Earth Crisis guitarist Scott Crouse recently said, “We can’t believe we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of Firestorm. None of us were even 20-years old when we recorded it. Its release forever changed our lives and, we are told, many other people’s. Come out and help us do this right.” When the dates were initially announced mid-May, the band noted to Alternative Press Magazine, “Come celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Firestorm EP with us! We’ll be playing the EP in its entirety, plus some rarely played other songs.”

LiveHighFive.com calls Firestorm, “one of the heaviest and most influential recordings in hardcore history.” Released via Victory Records in 1993, Wikipedia calls it “one of the more controversial releases in US hardcore history.” The EP would be followed by the release of the Earth Crisis’ full-length debut, Destroy the Machines, in 1995.

Syracuse, New York’s Earth Crisis was founded in 1989. The band has over 200,000 catalog sales to date, according to Nielsen Soundscan. Regardless of passing trends, the five-piece has maintained their vision, dedication to their craft (and causes), and most importantly, respected their fans in the 20-plus years of their performing career. Signing with Candlelight Records late 2012, the band enters a brand new chapter in their career. Vocalist Karl Buechner said, “I’m really looking forward to sharing this next chapter of EXC with Candlelight Records. I think they’ve proven to know the genre well, and will help push us in the right direction.” Reacting to the signing, Lambgoat.com editor Alex Arnold noted, “Earth Crisis has made a name for itself not only through punishing metal and hardcore, but via staunch support of straight edge, animal rights, and veganism. Few bands command the respect that Earth Crisis does, and they’ve earned it through 20 years of hard work and consistency.”

Earth Crisis Firestorm 20th Anniversary Tour:

  • 7/12/2013 Underground Arts – Philadelphia, PA w/ Shai Hulud, Thy Will Be Done, White Widows Pact
  • 7/13/2013 Lost Horizon – Syracuse, NY w/ Shai Hulud, Thy Will Be Done, White Widows Pact
  • 7/14/2013 Santos Party House – New York, NY w/ Shai Hulud, Thy Will Be Done, White Widows Pact

Upon completion of the dates, Earth Crisis will resume work on their currently untitled ninth studio album. The album will see the band re-team with noted producer/mixer Zeus (Hatebreed, Throwdown, Municipal Waste).

Earth Crisis is vocalist Karl Buechner, guitarists Scott Crouse and Erick Edwards, bassist Ian Edwards, and drummer Dennis Merrick.

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY: New Album & Tour Dates

Following their recent performance at the Fifth Annual Scion Fest in Memphis, Corrosion Of Conformity has announced live assaults for August. In addition to their already planned participation at Gwar’s annual BBQ, the trio will perform a headlining show in Wilmington, Delaware before heading to South America for a string of dates. The August shows mark a break from continued work in the recording studio on the band’s new album, expected for release in early 2014.

“We need a little escape from the studio,” comments vocalist/bassist Mike Dean. “We thought it would be good to see the light of the day a little bit. We are excited to play Brazil, Peru, Columbia, and Argentina for the first time ever. Of course returning to Mexico City and playing Gwar’s BBQ will be highlights for our summer as well. The new material is sounding really good but it’s time to get the perspective provided only by playing in front of a live audience. And we are talking about some very live audiences in this case.”

Updates regarding progress of the band’s forthcoming album came during the band’s late April West Coast tour with Danzig. Dean said, “We have a lot of lyric writing to refine but a lot of solid musical arrangements are in place. We plan to begin basic tracking for half the songs as soon as we return to North Carolina.” The initial work on the still untitled album found the band not long out of the recording studio having recently completed their Scion/AV EP Megalodon. The special EP was included free to all customers to the band’s official webstore and is still available as a free download by clicking HERE. Dean notes, “The EP was written, recorded, and released in two months time. It really challenged us in a good way.” In the meantime, fans can check out live footage of the band’s first-ever appearance in Chile at this year’s Metal Fest this past April at THIS LOCATION.

Corrosion Of Conformity released their self-titled album via Candlelight Records to high praise late February 2012. It was the first new material by the North Carolina trio since 2005. “Corrosion Of Conformity is what you want out of a comeback record: not just a reclaimation of lost vigor but a meaningful update on a vintage sound,” said Pitchfork. “The celebrated Animosity line-up displays a command of style far beyond anything their 1985 selves could have imagined,” added Decibel. The album debuted on Billboard’s Top 200 chart at position 157 and impacted CMJ’s Loud Rock chart at position 8 on its debut week before working its way up to the top spot. It remained on the magazine’s popular radio chart Top 10 for eight weeks.

Formed in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1982, Corrosion Of Conformity quickly transformed heavy music. The band has influenced countless new bands and today remains humble about their accomplishments. To date, the band has sold over 1.1 million albums in the United States and continues to find new fans via non-stop touring.

Corrosion Of Conformity:

  • 8/17/2013 Hadad’s Lake (Gwar BBQ) – Richmond, VA
  • 8/18/2013 Mojo 13 – Wilmington, DE
  • 8/24/2013 Manifesto Bar – Sao Paolo, Brazil
  • 8/25/2013 El Teatro Flores – Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • 8/27/2013 Mangos – Lima, Peru
  • 8/28/2013 Las Vegas Nevada – Bogota, Colombia
  • 8/31/2013 Circo Volador – Mexico City, Mexico

Corrosion Of Conformity is vocalist/bassist Mike Dean, guitarist Woody Weatherman, and drummer Reed Mullin.

“Corrosion Of Conformity will challenge as many fans as it excites. And that, of course, suits COC’s legacy, no matter which era holds your allegiance.” – Indy Week

DEMON LUNG: To Tour The West Coast In Support Of Debut Album

Las Vegas-based doom metallers Demon Lung will venture west in the coming weeks to perform selections from their recently released full-length debut, The Hundredth Name. Joining the quintet on select dates will be friends Wounded Giant and Castle. Dates are set to begin June 29th in Salt Lake City and wrap with a hometown show on August 18th.

The Hundredth Name was released June 4th via Candlelight Records. Since its release, the The Hundredth Name has found a solid support network among media and college radio programmers nationwide, peaking on CMJ’s Loud Rock report at position 14 with Full Metal Jacket/DMX programming the album in its syndication networks plus specialty and college play from the likes of WAQX (Syracuse NY), WZGM (Asheville NC), WHMH (St. Cloud MN), WSOU (S. Orange NJ), WCSB (Cleveland OH), KFSR (Fresno CA), and WIXQ (Millersville PA), among many others.

Las Vegas Weekly says, “everything about Demon Lung’s debut screams epic.” Metal Review confirms, “vocalist Shanda Fredrick’s measured delivery is bleak and monotone… a grimly deliberate wail that works magic.” Pitchfork.com boasts, “Fredrick emerges like a high empress,“ while Vegas Seven adds, “literate and lacerating, the ‘Lung breathes real fire.” The album was recently selected as “Album Of The Day” by Roadburn.com where they crowned Demon Lung “a band with promise.”

Formed in 2011, Demon Lung self-released their EP Pareidolia in early 2012. The band entered the studio to record The Hundredth Name with producer Billy Anderson (Neurosis, The Melvins, Sleep) in late December. The Hundredth Name was completed in early 2013 with final artwork provided by rising English illustrator Tom Gates (Vision of Disorder, Amorphis).

“Fusing a smoky occult sensibility with classic doom metal songwriting, in the style of Candlemass or the Obsessed, The Hundredth Name is unquestionably dark and sludgy in tone while nimble and dynamic in composition.” – Exclaim!

“If you were to take all the great doom bands throughout history, from Black Sabbath to Candlemass to Saint Vitus to Electric Wizard, there would be enough sonic differences to sometimes overshadow the similarities. The great doom bands moving forward won’t be the ones simply copying what the forefathers have laid down before us. They’ll be the ones learning from the masters and then forging their own distinct voice that will rise above all others. Demon Lung have done exactly that.” – Metal Insider

“A modern doom masterpiece” – Ghost Cult Magazine

“…a hulking, apocalyptic record that does its subject matter justice over and over again.” – Meat, Mead, Metal

“The future of doom seems to be in safe hands.” – This Is Not A Scene

“So there it is: with the right ingredients — unflinching confidence, solid production, regional uniqueness, and a dash of Satan — you could strike sparks anywhere. More alluring than loathsome, Demon Lung is here to fearlessly take you to the pentagrammar school of DOOM, little lambs.” – Last Rites
